Everything is Connected: 06 December 2012
[Brent Chittenden sees connections where no one else does. Or should. But that's the fun of it. -AC]
It’s another Thursday and time once again for Everything is Connected, it’s like an entire season of Doctor Who but less British.
I’m a big fan of the band Ministry and have been since Dan Hulse introduced me to the Psalm 69 album back in grade 8. In fact, in a roundabout way, Ministry got me this gig as Alan and I first started corresponding due to an email I sent him asking for an episode of his show on Ministry.
But that’s a story for another day. Instead let’s focus on another Al and his band and their connection to the 1912 Olympic Games.
Ministry, for the longest time was the standard bearer for “industrial” bands everywhere. Their influence can be found a ton of now influential bands like Nine Inch Nails. Their single “Jesus Built My Hotrod” at one time was one of Warner Bros best selling singles. But their connection to the 1912 Olympics comes through an interesting route.
In 2001, Steven Spielberg made a film called A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The film was a sci-fi film about a robot who wanted to be a real boy and features a cameo from Ministry. Supposedly this cameo came about due to an idea from the director who had planned to direct A.I., Stanley Kubrick who had planned to do the film until his untimely death in 1999.
Kubrick’s best film (okay, in my opinion, his best film) was Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, a great black comedy starring George C. Scott. Scott had a number of memorable roles in films like The Hustler, Hardcore, Firestarter and Patton.
In Patton, George C. Scott played General George Patton. Patton was involved in a number of well known battles in World War 2 including in the Battle of the Bulge but what is not as widely known is that Patton was part of the very first U.S. Pentathlon team for the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.
So there you have it:
Ministry – Spielberg – Kubrick – Scott – Patton – 1912 Olympics
Do you have a connection we should know about? If so, please leave it in the comments below and we may feature it in an upcoming edition!
