The Ongoing History of New Music Encore Presentation: Great Lost Albums
Making an album is straightforward, right? You write some song, go into a studio and a few months later, something gets released. And 99% of the time, that’s exactly what happens.
All right, what about that final 1%?
Those are the times when someone goes into a studio, starts working on an album and then for whatever reason, nothing gets released. Time, money and energy is poured into a project and out the other end comes…nothing.
There are a surprising a number of lost albums, records that were made (or at least partially made) that will never, ever see the light of day. And they involve some very big names.
These are the lost albums of alt-rock.

My favourite lost album is PWEI’s post-Dos Dedos Mis Amigos follow-up. Band broke up before it was completed. Tapes were found at Nothing Records around five years ago. Cleaned up a bit and arranged by Clint Mansell, and the work done was released as bonus tracks on the anniversary release of Dos Dedis Mis Amigos.

This was a really interesting topic for a very interesting podcast. If anything it is making me re-evaluate Machina/Machine of God album by the SP’s. I remember thinking when it first came out that it had some solid stuff but a lot of not such good stuff too. Knowing the history about is now making me think I should give a second spin (so to speak).
As for lost records I thought it was interesting that you didn’t talk about records that were scrapped due to members of the band leaving during or after the recording or anything like that. The one that comes to my mind is Deftones’ “Eros” album, which they recorded until their bass player was involved in a car accident that eventually ended his life. The album was shelved, a new bass player hired and they recorded a new album. Moreno has gone back and forward on whether the album will ever be released.
