Pink Floyd Fans: V&A Has an Exhibit for You

A Pink Floyd exhibit opened recently at London’s V&A museum. Presented by the museum and Michael Cohl’s Iconic entertainment The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and debut single, “Arnold Layne”. Originally conceived by Storm Thorgerson and developed by Aubrey “Po” Powell, who worked closely with Pink Floyd consultant Nick Mason, this new exhibit brings visitors through a 50 year audio-visual journey of one of the world’s most iconic rock groups. It also gives a rare and exclusive glimpse into the band’s world. Featuring many previously unseen objects collected over the band’s history, the exhibit begins with an oversized recreation of the Bedford van that brought the band to their gigs in the mid-60’s.

Floor-to-ceiling installations by Stufish encapsulate the scale and ambition of Pink Floyd’s imagery and live performances. Drawing together many unique artefacts illustrating the band’s relationship with music art, design, technology, and performance from every stage of their career and personal lives, visitors get up close and personal with a massive representation of The Wall stage set used during the original 1980-81 tour, complete with giant inflatable schoolteacher looming over top. Earlier exhibits include the punishment book and cane from the Cambridge and County High School for Boys where original guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett and bassist Roger Waters attended school in the late 1950s.

Other relics include several of David Gilmour’s guitars, including his famous Black Strat, and Richard Wright’s early-70s Mini Moog synthesizer, plus a treasure trove of effects pedals, hand-painted drum heads, echo chambers, and many other pieces of musical technology.

The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains runs until October 1. If you want to learn more about the exhibit or to buy tickets, check out the official website here.
