Time to crowdsource wedding songs again. Any suggestions for this couple?

This email arrived over the weekend from Drew. He poses a timeless question.

I’m working in planning my own wedding, and my future wife, Heather, and I want to find a first dance song that is something we might normally listen to – so not that John Legend song everyone uses. For us, this means an acoustic alt-rock song.

Any thoughts on great alt-rock songs for weddings? Could even just be an acoustic version of an otherwise heavy song.

We’ve done some digging and shortlisted the following songs so far:

  • Home/dirty paws – Gardiner Sisters
  • Shut up and dance – Anchor + Bell (walk the moon acoustic cover)
  • Rather Be – Jasmine Thompson (clean bandit acoustic cover)
  • My heart’s always yours (acoustic) – Arkells

Thanks in advance!

Drew and Heather

This is always a tough one.  They might want to take a page from Trent Reznor whose first dance his wife Mariqueen was something from the instrumental group Explosions in the Sky. I’m not 100% sure on the song, but I know it was something from them.

If they want to go retro, there’s always Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”…

…or Depeche Mode’s “Somebody.”

What else can we recommend to Drew and Heather?

I have a playlist of David Cook love songs I’ve always thought these 3 would be amazing for a wedding.
    I’m Gonna Love You
    Fade into me
And especially From Here to Zero

There are acoustic version of all of them I think.

Garbage – The World Is Not Enough (it’s strangely sensual, but at the same time has a powerful commitment message that you could explain away to the grandparents)

The Cardigans – Lead Me Into the Night (If you’re looking for a sort of Goth thing… it’s sweet sounding and makes for a nice dance)

The Foreign Exchange – Something In the Way She Moves (James Taylor Cover) (Offbeat move from a band that’s based out of North Carolina but has a great story… or “Daykeepeer” if you’re looking for something on the darker side)

Oh Susanna – Into My Arms (A wonderful little thing that Lightfoot wrote for her)

Sarah Harmer – Home Soon (Oh Susanna Cover) (An amazing piece that was included on one of those Starbucks CDs years ago — but has some serious chops as a first dance song)

OR, for something way off the beaten path (but still pretty great…)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – I’ll Love You Until the End of the World (Written for the soundtrack “Until the End of the World,” an unbelievable piece. Way off beat for a first dance, but romantic as all being.)

Speaking of Sarah Harmer, how about Open Window (The Wedding Song)
