Weekly Music Sales and Analysis: 18 June 2014

The good news is that sales didn’t slip any more over the past week, leaving the Canadian album market down 7% compared to 2013.  Physical CDs are down 7%, digital albums are down 8% and digital tracks are down 13%. But like I said, things didn’t get any worse.

Jack White debuted at #1 in Canada with Lazeratto, moving 14,000 units.  He’s followed by Whisper from Passengers (#2, 7,000), Big Wreck’s Ghosts (#5, 4,000) and Quebecois artist Kevin Parent and Face A L’Ouest at #10 (3,000).  Our biggest download is “Stay with Me” from Sam Smith, which sold 24,000 copies.

On the American side of things, it’s Jack at #1 (138,000 copies, 40,000 of which were on vinyl) followed by Top 10 debuts from…well, no one.  That’s it.  To put things in perspective, if Lazeratto had just been released on vinyl, it would have finished at #4 on the charts.

The biggest digital song is still “Fancy” from Iggy Azalea with 226,000 downloads. It’s also the most-streamed song in the US.
