A new study looks at the music habits of Gen Alpha

First came the Boomers, followed by Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. The newest up-and-comers are Gen Alpha, those born between 2010 and 2024 (i.e. those between 1 and 16 years old). And like their ancestors, Gen Alpha is into music. How they consume music may surprise you.

A manufacturing company called Key Productions Group commissioned a study that involved 2,000 respondents, This is what they found.

  • 46% listen to CDs
  • 38% listen to vinyl

While this may seem surprising at first, consider the age of these kids. Parents will have a lot of influence during these years. The survey also reported that 80% of parent prefer their sprogs listen to physical music and not through streaming or smartphones.

Another thing to consider is that Key Productions Groups is in the business of selling music in physical forms. Then again, there are indications that a trend is afoot. The CEO of Key Productions says, “For many of these young listeners, physical music offers something digital formats can’t: a sense of authenticity, ownership, and emotional connection.”

And Gen Alpha is not alone. The study also found that 71% of Gen Z and 75% of Gen Z are listening to more physical music to cut down on screen time.
