Another check on the Canadian sales battle between CDs and vinyl

The year only is a month old and it looks like the outcome is already obvious. Pending some weird and improbably spike in CD sales, vinyl will be the biggest-selling physical format in Canada come the end of 2025. Talk about a back to the future situation, huh? We haven’t seen anything like this since at least the early 90s.

Here are this week’s numbers courtesy Luminate.

  • CDs sold in Canada last week: 26,384 (down 3.3% from the previous week)
  • Vinyl LPs sold in Canada last week: 28,810 (down 11.4% from a week ago)
  • CDs sold in Canada so far this year: 113,512 (down -3.1% from this point in 2024)
  • Vinyl LPs sold in Canada so far this year: 131,426 (ahead 2.9% year-over-year)

As for streaming numbers:

  • Songs streamed in Canada last week: 2,788,341,448 (up 0.9% from last week)
  • Songs streamed in Canada this year: 11,936,302,309 (up 9.3% from this point last year)
