Anyone remember this old Canadian animated movie called Rock and Rule?

Back in 1981, it looked like there might be a boom in animated movies for adults. I, for example, was smitten with the 1981 film Heavy Metal, largely because of the dark themes and a killer soundtrack. A few more projects in that vein followed around the same time, including a Canadian production called Rock and Rule.

Don’t let the cheesy summary put you off (“A malevolent rock star kidnaps a singer to force her to participate in the summoning of a demon, and her band must help her stop him.”) It’s actually a lot of fun.

Not a bad soundtrack, either. It included material from Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick, and Lou Reed.

If you have about 90 minutes, you can watch the whole thing here. (Thanks to Makenzy for reminding me about this movie.)

  • When I was in College I used to screen movies once a week in the campus auditorium. Rock & Rule was one of the movies I screened.
