Coldplay just played the biggest stadium show of the millennium

It’s only been recently that Western acts have taken an interest in performing in India. Now everyone wants a piece of the concert-going public in the most populous country in the world.

Coldplay is one of them. Their Music of the Spheres tour, the second highest-grossing tour of all time with box office receipts in excess of US$1 billion so far. pulled into Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (January 25) to play a gig in front of a staggering 220,000 people.

This was the biggest crowd in Coldplay’s history and by far the largest stadium audience for a concert so far this century.

Coldplay isn’t done, yet. They’re off to Hong Kong and South Korea before taking a break ahead of some stadium shows in North America. They’ve sold 12 million tickets so far. How big will that total get? And will their box office takings eclipse that of Taylor Swift. (SPOILER: Probably not.)
