Damn Gen Z kids know nothing about 90s music. Here’s proof.
Before anyone flies off the handle, remember that every generation has the right to believe that the music of their youth is the greatest of all time. And even with the easy access to 120 million songs via streaming, today’s young people can’t be expected to know about the music of someone else’s youth. Still, this is going to annoy some people.
A brand of UK drink conducted a survey of 2,000 Gen Z (many born at the height of Britpop) and the results show that they perhaps need to brush up on their music history. Here are some highlights.
- They were asked about Britpop. Two-thirds weren’t sure what that meant. A political party? A Eurovision contestant?
- 20% never heard of Blur.
- 15% thought that Noel and Liam Gallagher were some kind of TV hosts.
- 11% thought they were TV chefs.
- 8% believed that Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker is actually a breed of dog.
- 6% thought the Happy Mondays was a Viagra-type pill. (14% thought they were a wellness app)
- 15% believed that Cool Britannia was the name of the royal yacht. About 10% picked it as the name of Britain’s national anthem. (Okay, that’s not good.)

I wonder if a similar poll conducted in Canada would result in the same about our 90s alt-rock scene. Pretty sure many gen z don’t know who Our Lady Peace, Moist or The Tea Party were. Maybe the Tragically Hip outside of Quebec (where I’m from).
