Survey

Do people really hate Coldplay? There’s been a statistical study.

Music is a highly subjective thing. An artist that is one person’s jam is another’s torture. The bigger an artist becomes, the more likely they’ll encounter haters. And if you become as ubiquitous as Coldplay, your relationship with the world becomes…complicated.

Stat Significant attempted to determine if Coldplay hate really is what some will have us believe. Let’s check it out.

  • Coldplay has around 92 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Only Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Billy Eilish, and Bad Bunny have more.
  • AccuRadio, another streaming service, has its users rate songs on a scale of 1-5. Coldplay trackers average 4.13. Bad Bunny, SZA, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna are the only big acts that do better–and only slightly better, at that.
  • If we look at the most-streamed songs, which artist has the most songs rated one star? Justin Bieber is at 19.4%. Coldplay’s dud rating is 10.6%, equal to Billie Eilish.
  • Coldplay has a “dancebility” rating of just 0.46. That’s at the bottom of the list.
  • Coldplay’s “positivity” rating is also the worst in class, averaging just 0.25.
  • On the other hand, Pitchfork ratings for Coldplay material average just 5.79 out of 10. Kendrick Lamar, on the other hand, averages 8.81.
  • When it comes to internet searches, the sixth-most popular Coldplay-related query is “Are Coldplay gay.” I don’t know what to do with that information.
  • The Daily Mail conducted a survey to determine the “least cool” artist. Cliff Richard was first. Coldplay was 11th.
