Gen Z is gobbling up a lot of vinyl records. A LOT.

Sales of vinyl records are still on a tear in most countries (including Canada), but who’s buying all this plastic? Boomers and Gen Xers, yes. And Gen Z, too.

The Vinyl Alliance which works with the industry, has just published a survey of more than 2,500 people from around the planet. It found that people between the ages of 18 and 24–prime Gen Z have a huge appetite for vinyl. It suggests that 76% of Gen Z vinyl fans buy records at least once a month.

A few other data points:

  • 91% of the people in the survey buy vinyl “at least annually”
  • 29% self-identify as “diehard collectors”
  • Gen Zers consider vinyl as “an ultimate symbol of fandom.”
  • 50% say that collecting vinyl “provides a break from digital life.”
  • 61% say records are replacing digital listening in their life “to improve their mental wellbeing.”
  • 84% love going to a physical record store, citing “vinyl community events” as a big part of the experience.
  • There are challenges, though. About 29% say that they’ve cut back on vinyl because life is becoming too expensive.
