Is Gen Z quitting music? Let’s look into that.
Gen Z grew up being connected to the internet 24-7 and are increasingly aware that they are slaves to their devices. (To be fair, we’re all in this boat.) According to some recent reporting at Dazed, some Gen Zers are quitting music. Why? As a way to be less reliant on their devices. Here’s a 27-year-old quoted in the article.
“I can’t pinpoint the exact shift in my mindset towards music, only that I realized I spent more time skipping songs on Spotify or trying to find the ‘right song’ to walk, drive and complete chores to, so I just thought, you know what? Let me give it a break for a bit.
“Growing up, I used music as a coping mechanism, as I’m sure a lot of us did, and it was a way to distract myself from my real feelingsQuitting music feels like a fog has been lifted from my brain. I feel like I have more clarity to think. I’ve become so much more reflective simply because I’m no longer in this daydream state of being.”
Then there’s this.
I hope this isn't too much of a hot take but too much music is bad for you. Listen to a podcast about a topic you're interested in. Are you even listening to it with the volume at less than 60%? Unplug your headphones. Hear the birds chirp. The sea. A motorcycle. Subway gossip. pic.twitter.com/BGmyAflP8t

Fascinating. Do you see this anywhere in your world?
One more thing: Not only have they stopped listening to music, but they’re dumping social media. (That’s the healthy part.)
