It’s the first CD vs vinyl battle report of 2025. Guess what’s ahead?

In case you missed the news, vinyl had a late year surge in sales to pull past CDs when it comes to which format sold the most. According to Luminate, 1,854,710 CDs were sold across the country in all of 2024 while vinyl sold 1,867,640 copies, up 32.4% from a year ago. Vinyl won by 9,930 units. A vinyl sales victory hasn’t happened since, what, 1990?

Let’s look at how 2025 has started.

  • Total CDs sold in Canada during the first full of 2025: 32,277 (a post-Christmas drop of 39.4%)
  • Total LPs sold during that same period: 39,517 (down 14.4% from the previous week)

This means vinyl goes into 2025 with a sales lead of 7,240 units.

As for streaming, we listened to 2,652,893,878 songs last week. That’s an increase of 5.9% from the week previous week and how we go into 2025.
