Mexico says “FYRE Festival II? It does not exist.”

Billy McFarland, the scammer and fraudster who spent time in jail after ripping off people with the disastrous FYRE Festival, is trying it again. And it looks like he’s failing again, too.

The event, allegedly set for Isla Mujeres, a quiet island off the coast of Cancun, is scheduled to start May 30. Tickets are on sale(US$1,400 to US$1.1 million) but there’s no line-up, no list of activities, and, apparently, no site on the island. Local authorities have no idea what’s going on. I quote Edgar Gasca, the tourism directorate for the island: “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or any company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”

This was posted on Facebook.

The municipal president of Isla Mujeres says ““People are trying to use the peace and tranquillity we have created here for their own benefit.” All she knows is what she’s read online.

Others have reached out to hotels in the region, including those listed on the FYRE II website. None of them have been contacted by the festival. This is in direct opposition to this statement from UNIK Travel, which is somehow involved.

“As a group, we have established contact with the municipal and state authorities to establish the certainty of a healthy event, and thus, obtained the respective official announces [sic] and collaborations that guarantee total compliance, support the local community, and offer responsibly a boutique event that raises the prestige and long-term value of the destination.”

FYRE II real? Yeah, right. If you’ve bought tickets to this fiasco-in-the-making, you’re probably the kind of person who voted for Donald Trump twice.
