Ongoing History Daily: A dumb suggestion for Linkin Park

When you’re a new band, people at the label you’ve just signed to will have all kinds of notes and suggestions they believe will help you become successful. Sometimes, though, those ideas are just plain stupid.

Take the case of Linkin Park. When they finally got a deal with Warner—they were rejected so many times before they finally got a contract—one of the A&R people at the label suggested that the band needed some kind of choreographic stunt onstage. Keep in mind that this guy’s experience was with R&B and rap acts.

He wanted Linkin Park to develop a routine where Mike Shinoda or Chester Bennington stepped up to the mic at some point in the show and either step out of their shoes or maybe kick a shoe into the audience.

Linkin Park, er, put their foot down and refused.
