Ongoing History Daily: Funeral songs
This is a bit of a morbid question, but I’ll ask it anyway: “What song would you most like to have played at your funeral?” This is a thing for some people with the most popular songs being “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, “Time to Say Goodbye” by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Botocelli and Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Fine. Whatever floats your boat.
However, these attitudes may be changing. A survey of people in the UK suggests that “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from Monty Python is gaining traction—and fast. The song from the 1979 movie, Life of Brian, caused outrage when people first saw it because it was sung by a bunch of people being crucified. Now, though, its irreverence seems to be striking a chord with the current generation of people on their way to shuffling off this mortal coil and joining the choir invisible. I kinda like the idea, actually.
Which brings me to this question: If a send-off song is your thing, what would it be?
