Ongoing History Daily: The greatest album release day ever?

New albums used to be released whenever they were ready. Then, to ensure every store got inventory prepared for sale on the same day, release day in North America was Tuesday. In 2015, 45 countries moved release day to Friday, which is why we have New Music Friday today.

Now consider this: What as the greatest single day for album releases? I’m going to nominate Tuesday, September 24, 1991. On that one day, we got Nevermind by Nirvana, BloodSugarSexMagick by the Chili Peppers, Trompe Le Monde by The Pixies, and The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest.

The day would have been even greater had Soundgarden not delayed the release of Badmotorfinger to October 8. September 24, 1991, was quite a day for record stores everywhere–the greatest album release day ever.
