Ongoing History: What is the band called “Mother Mother?”
Back in the beginning—which let’s say is 2005—there was a three-piece acoustic act from Vancouver called Mother. That went well so a bass player and a drummer were added. By the end of the year, Mother had recorded a debut record.
Opening slots followed with a bunch of Canadian and international artists. By the time the fall of 2006 rolled around, Mother was doing really, really well and began to attract the attention on a number of record labels.
Then, a problem. It turned out there were many, many other bands using the name “Mother” either presently or in the past. That’s when Last Gang, the Toronto indie label that wanted to sign them, gently suggested that they change their name to avoid any possible legal issues.
So, sometime in early 2007, Mother became Mother Mother. Problem solved.
