TikTok will stop working in the US on Sunday

One day before Donald Trump is sworn in, TikTok will stop working in the US. Trump had mused about giving the app a little more time, but TikTok isn’t going to wait. The company says it will shut down access to its app for American users when the ban is supposed to go into effect on Sunday, January 19.

According to several reports, American TikTok users will be greeted with a pop-up message directing them to a website that explains the ban. There will also be an opportunity for American TikTokers to download all their personal data.

This is a bit of a surprise since the expectation was that existing users would be able to continue using TikTok for an unspecified period of time. Nope. Barring some last-second reprieve, TikTok will be dead in the US come Sunday. Expect a HUGE outcry from users even as many try migrating to different sites like RedNote.

Is this permanent? Unknown. But if the ban gets reversed, TikTok says that users will be able to get back onboard “in a relatively short period of time.”

What does this mean for Canada? Unclear. Our official government position on the matter is a bit of a mess.
